2012 Olympic Games London

July 31st, 2010

The Olympic Games were first celebrated in 776 BC in Olympia (hence the name) in Greece. According to legend, Hercules is the originator of The Olympic Games. Legend says they were created to honor Hercules father, Zeus.

They were celebrated until 393 A.D. Pierre Fridy, Baron de Coubertin, revived the Olympics in their modern form in 1896. The Olympics are a contest of multiple sports and are divided into the Summer and Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics are a much smaller event than the Summer Games.

In 1896 there were 241 participants from 14 nations. This number grew until there were 11,100 competitors from 202 countries in The 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The Olympics are a huge media event. Well over half the world watched the Olympics in Sydney in 2000 (3.8 billion to be exact).

The growth of the Olympics is one of the major problems of the Olympics today. Sponsorships solved financial problems in the 1980’s. Today the large number of athletes, media and spectators make it difficult and expensive to host the Olympics. A great amount of infrastructure is needed.

London is to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The games are to be held from 27th July to 12th August 2012, to be followed by the Paralympic Games. An Olympic Village has been proposed to be built with 17,320 beds providing a comfortable and spacious environment for athletes.

There is to be a massive redevelopment of public transport. This includes the expansion of the London Underground’s East London Line, upgrades to the Docklands Light Railway and the North London Line, and the new “Javelin” service. The organizers aim to make 90% of venues accessible by at least three forms of public transport and 93% of training facilities to be within 30 minutes of travel of the athletes housing. Park and ride schemes are included among the many plans to decongest traffic. Some concern has been expressed on the logistics of travel outside London.

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will use a mixture of newly built venues, existing and historic facilities, and temporary facilities. Some locations are well known such as Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade. The land in the east end of London chosen for the site needs decontamination and major remedial work before it can be fit for the games.

What is going to be involved in the development proposal are compulsory purchases of some businesses. This has caused some amount of angst with businesses not being happy with the compensation offered. With all these logistical issues, it seems the cost for the 2012 London Olympics could rise to nearly four times the figure set out during the bid.

From an initial figure of 2.35 billion pounds, what is being discussed now is a staggering cost of 9 billion pounds. Construction alone could now cost 3.3 billion pounds. 2 billion pounds have been allocated as a contingency fund. Regeneration costs of 1.8 billion and a 1 billion pound VAT bill have also been added to the costs. Security costs have grown to 900 million pounds. The causes for a rise in costs include rise in commodity prices, adjustments to transport figures to reflect 2012 prices and a revised estimate for inflation on construction costs.

Will the 2012 Olympics fulfill their aim, which is to stage inspirational Games that capture the imagination of young people around the world and leave a lasting legacy? Only time will tell. However, with the effort being put in, we can hope that London 2012 will fly faster, higher, stronger and leave us happy memories of an Olympics well done.

Victoria to Host 2011 Canadian Figure Skating Championships

July 30th, 2010

Victoria is set to host the Canadian Figure Skating Championships and the Junior Nationals in January, 2011. The events will be held at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. This marks the third time Victoria has been chosen as the site for this event.

Canada’s performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics has fans excited for the return of their top performers.

Still undetermined, but expected to compete is Olympic bronze medalist, Joannie Rochette, who won the hearts of spectators everywhere with her courageous and nearly flawless performance at the Winter Games.

World champions, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, are also likely to take part in the competition. The pair earned the first ever gold medal for a North American ice dancing team after many memorable performances in 2010.

Over two hundred skaters will participate in the various classes of the competition in Victoria.

You will want a seat near the ice for this event. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 11. Check back with ShowTimeTickets.com, where we are never sold out!

ShowTimeTickets.com CEO and Founder, Mario Livich explains, “Compared to the average country show with a face value of $60 to $80 for plaza level seating,it’s an expensive concert and with more than one show, the demand we initially experienced has faded, similar to the market we recently experienced with the three Police shows. But the fact that Tim and Faith have not performed together in Canada since 2000, along with overwhelming reviews (the first Soul2Soul tour was named Pollstar Magazine’s ‘Major Tour of 2006′) and below face value pricing, I think fans coming to town from all across the province are happy to hear there are still tickets available and affordable.

Goal Setting – the Beijing Olympics and Beyond

July 29th, 2010

Note to Self : Learning from the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Achieving Goals

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing has come to a close. We will once again be at a loss for something to watch on TV or discuss around the water cooler at work. The 2008 Olympics stood out among those that came before it for a number of reasons that captivated audiences around the globe. Though the games started out with controversy over the host city, I believe the games will be remembered most for the positive achievements of the athletes. Athletes at the 2008 Olympic games broke more Olympic and World Records than any games before it.

A few of the most remarkable achievements of the 2008 Games :

Michael Phelps of the U.S.A. won eight gold medals
Rohullah Nikpai won Afghanistan’s first ever Olympic medal
Natalie du Toit of South Africa became the first Amputee swimmer to compete in the Olympic Games instead of the Para-Olympic Games.
After promising his wife on her deathbed that he would become a German Citizen and win Gold for Germany, Matthias Steiner succeeded by winning gold in weightlifting, surpassing the favored competitors and finding unbelievable strength when he needed it.

I will remember the Beijing Olympics as being one of the most exciting and inspirational Olympics I have had the privilege of watching.

We, as e-marketers and e-business owners, can learn much from the amazing athletes who competed there. I want to talk candidly to you about Goal Setting and why so many of us seem to fall short or loose site of the goals we make.

The difference between those that stood out at the 2008 Olympics and those that went home overshadowed and disappointed had much to do with Mind Set. The best case in point is Michael Phelps. He set for himself a Goal of getting an unprecedented eight gold medals in swimming. Many, including the previous record holder with seven gold medals in one Olympic Games, said that Michale could not do it. With all of the negative thoughts and the media poised and waiting for his failure, Michael achieved his goal.

How?

Michael set the goal for himself and never once said “I don’t think I can”, “maybe I can” , “it would be great if…” or “it would be ok if I didn’t make it”. Michael, in all of the interviews, had a positive Mind Set and smiled as he said “I will do it”. And he did.

Goal Setting is not about writing them down, although that can help to visualize them. Goal Setting is really about creating a positive Mind Set and a positive self dialogue about the things you want to achieve. We all talk to ourselves all the time. Most of us do this internally in our heads, though some of us do this out loud in the bathroom when we think no one is listening. If the dialogue we have with ourselves is positive or negative will have a big impact on our daily lives and on achieving the goals we have set for ourselves.
It does not matter if the goal is small, huge, or even outrageous. How we choose to approach the goals we set will in the end determine their success or failure. That’s right, Mind Set is a choice. No matter the adversity you may face while on the path to your goal, you can choose to keep positive and focused.

Here are some simple ways to get your Goal Setting in the right Mind Set

Give yourself small, achievable Daily Goals and say something positive to yourself when you reach them.
If you give yourself a negative criticism, change it into a positive critique. For example, instead of saying “I completely failed” when a sales prospect falls through, say “That is ok, I will learn from this and be successful next time. My goal is still achievable”.
Don’t let others drag you down. Brush off critique that is harsh and not helpful to building success. You, and only you, are in control of achieving your goals.
Learn to accept Constructive Criticism, especially from yourself.
Remember that everyone has to start somewhere, no one is perfect, if someone had figured it all out we would all be out of business, and the only thing stopping you from being effective and successful is You.

The Olympic Games – A Brief (And Bizarre) History

July 28th, 2010

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of modern-day Olympics. With so much drama, so much romance, so much pizzazz, it is hard to imagine this world-wide spectacle being anything less than perfect. But you don’t have to dig too deeply to discover a humble and oft-times peculiar origin. Truly, it has taken several decades of Hollywood magic to produce the polished sports event we take for granted today.

According to Roman legend, the original Olympic Games were founded by none other than Heracles, the super human son of Zeus, no doubt as an opportunity to demonstrate his god like strength in front of the ladies. An alternative legend tells the story of Pelops, a Greek romantic, and father of the Olympics. In a desperate attempt to win the hand of his bride, Hippodamia, Pelops challenged her father, the King of Pisa, to a chariot race. To give himself the edge, Pelops replaced the king’s linchpin with one made of wax, which melted during the race, throwing the king from his chariot and killing him. Upon winning the race, the girl, and the entire empire, Pelops declared this the first Olympic Games – forever instilling the qualities of cheating and deception upon the games.

The ancient Olympics had their own version of celebrity appearances, including Homer, Socrates, Aristotle and Hippocrates. Even Plato got in on the games, winning not one but two gold medals in the pankration event. The original “games” really only entailed one game, a 192 meter dash known as “the stade” – which was run entirely in the nude (once again giving Heracles an excuse to strut his stuff). In fact, the word “gymnasium” comes from the Greek “gymnos”, which literally means “school for naked exercise”. Later additions to the Olympics included boxing, jumping, discus and javelin, which gladly did include clothing. The surprising exception to this events list is the marathon race. This famous run, including the torch, were never part of ancient Olympics, and were not added to the venue until over 1500 years later.

The ancient games lasted nearly 1200 years, from at least 776 BC to 393 AD, when the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the games because he felt they were pagan and evil. And so the Olympic Games slept for over a thousand years until 1892, when a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea at a meeting of the Union des Sports Athletiques in Paris. His pitch failed miserably. But ever the optimist, Pierre tried again two years later, this time in front a meeting of 79 delegates representing 9 countries. The delegates voted unanimously in favor of the revitalization, and so, in 1896 in the city of Athens, the Olympics were reborn.

The 1896 games were a disaster. As the games were poorly publicized, they never received the international support needed. Contestants were not backed by their respective countries, and in fact were forced to travel to Greece at their own expense. Several of the contestants were tourists who just happened to be in Greece on holiday.

Due to poor planning, the 1896 games was held in very cold weather, though it consisted entirely of “summer” events. In her book First to the Wall, 100 Years of Olympic Swimming, Kelly Gonsalves describes the first swimming event: “Not only did they battle 12-foot waves, but the weather in Greece was unusually cold and the water was a frigid 55 degrees Fahrenheit.” The book goes on to tell the story of Garner Williams, an American Swimmer, who despite spending a fortune to train and travel to the Olympics, jumped out of the water after only a few moments into the race yelling “I’m freezing”.

Other athletes also had difficult experiences at the Olympic games. After traveling on foot from Rome to Athens, a one month journey, the Italian athlete Carlo Airoldi was banned from the games because he was a professional. As the book The Olympic’s Strangest Moments describes, Dorando Pietri was denied his marathon gold because an over-anxious official helped him cross the finish line.

The Olympics are typically thought of as an event of world unity, though history would have something else to say. The official Olympic flag, designed in 1914 by Pierre de Coubertin, contains five interconnected rings, the symbolize the “five significant continents of the world”, leaving Africa completely off the map. 1936 brought the games to pre-war Germany, an opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of the “Aryan” race, or so thought Adolf Hitler, who campaigned heavily to secure the games. Of course, many will remember Jesse Owens, the African American runner who proudly taught the Germans a thing or two. The win of Luxembourg’s Josef Barthel in 1952 was met with an embarrassed silence. As no one expected a Luxembourg athlete to win, the orchestra at the medals ceremony was without the score to Luxenbourg’s national anthem.

Over the years, several attempts have been made to improve the Olympics. Both motor-boat racing, and bicycle polo were introduced, and later removed from the games. Hollywood was literally brought in to add some pizzazz in the 1960 Winter Games. Walt Disney was elected head of the organizing committee over opening ceremonies, which included special effects, ice statues, and the releasing of 2,000 white doves.

Scams, politics, wins and heartbreaks: these words apply equally as well to the modern day Olympics as to ancient. If the Olympic games have taught us anything, it’s that society never changes, even after thousands of years. If Pelops could visit our games today, while he might be impressed with our bright fireworks and Hollywood illusions, I think he would feel quite at home with the true game on display: human nature.

Best Olympic Gift I’ve Got – the Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

Best Olympic Gift I’ve Got – The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

I get a gift from one of my best friends just came back from China last weekend. They were there a month because he works for a company that’s local here and is helping build a factory in China, so they brought me back Official Olympic Mascot Magnets, I was so excited to get them, and I just had to share them with you – http://china-gift-art-products.blogspot.com

Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace — and good wishes from China — to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China’s most popular animals — the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow — and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name — a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

When you put their names together — Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni — they say “Welcome to Beijing,” offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.

Fuwa also embody both the landscape and the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast country of China. In their origins and their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature — the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky — all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornamentation.

Spreading Traditional Chinese Good Wishes Wherever They Go

In the ancient culture of China, there is a grand tradition of spreading good wishes through signs and symbols. Each of Fuwa symbolizes a different blessing — and will honor this tradition by carrying their good wishes to the children of the world. Prosperity, happiness, passion, health and good luck will be spread to every continent as Fuwa carry their invitation to Beijing 2008 to every part of the globe.

At the heart of their mission — and through all of their work — Fuwa will seek to unite the world in peace and friendship through the Olympic spirit. Dedicated to helping Beijing 2008 spread its theme of One World, One Dream to every continent, Fuwa reflect the deep desire of the Chinese people to reach out to the world in friendship through the Games — and to invite every man, woman and child to take part in the great celebration of human solidarity that China will host in the light of the flame in 2008.

In China’s traditional culture and art, the fish and water designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And so Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A fish is also a symbol of surplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good life.

The ornamental lines of the water-wave designs are taken from well-known Chinese paintings of the past. Among Fuwa, Beibei is known to be gentle and pure. Strong in water sports, she reflects the blue Olympic ring.

 Fuwa Beibei

In China’s traditional culture and art, the fish and water designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And so Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A fish is also a symbol of surplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good life.

Fuwa JingJing

Jingjing makes children smile — and that’s why he brings the blessing of happiness wherever he goes. You can see his joy in the charming naivety of his dancing pose and the lovely wave of his black and white fur. As a national treasure and a protected species, pandas are adored by people everywhere. The lotus designs in Jingjing’s headdress, which are inspired by the porcelain paintings of the Song Dynasty (A.D.960-1234), symbolize the lush forest and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Jingjing was chosen to represent our desire to protect nature’s gifts — and to preserve the beauty of nature for all generations. Jingjing is charmingly naïve and optimistic. He is an athlete noted for strength who represents the black Olympic ring.

 Fuwa HuanHuan

In the intimate circle of Fuwa, Huanhuan is the big brother. He is a child of fire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport — and passion is the blessing he bestows. Huanhuan stands in the center of Fuwa as the core embodiment of the Olympic spirit. And while he inspires all with the passion to run faster, jump higher and be stronger, he is also open and inviting. Wherever the light of Huanhuan shines, the inviting warmth of Beijing 2008 — and the wishful blessings of the Chinese people — can be felt. The fiery designs of his head ornament are drawn from the famed Dunhuang murals — with just a touch of China’s traditional lucky designs. Huanhuan is outgoing and enthusiastic. He excels at all the ball games and represents the red Olympic ring.

Fuwu Yingying

Like all antelopes, Yingying is fast and agile and can swiftly cover great stretches of land as he races across the earth. A symbol of the vastness of China’s landscape, the antelope carries the blessing of health, the strength of body that comes from harmony with nature. Yingying’s flying pose captures the essence of a species unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the first animals put under protection in China. The selection of the Tibetan Antelope reflects Beijing’s commitment to a Green Olympics. His head ornament incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Sinkiang cultures and the ethnic design traditions of Western China. Strong in track and field events, Yingying is a quick-witted and agile boy who represents the yellow Olympic ring.

Fuwa Nini

Among Fuwa, Nini is as innocent and joyful as a swallow. She is strong in gymnastics and represents the green Olympic ring. Every spring and summer, the children of Beijing have flown beautiful kites on the currents of wind that blow through the capital. Among the kite designs, the golden-winged swallow is traditionally one of the most popular. Nini’s figure is drawn from this grand tradition of flying designs. Her golden wings symbolize the infinite sky and spread good-luck as a blessing wherever she flies. Swallow is also pronounced “yan” in Chinese, and Yanjing is what Beijing was called as an ancient capital city.

Last, if you are now Staying in Beijing for watching the 2008 Beijing Olymic Games, you can buy Olympic gifts very conveniently, according to some reports, there are many Olympic gift shops opened for business at 44 branches of the Beijing Post. Postal customers in Yayuncun, Zhongguancun and other areas around the city can now purchase officially licensed Beijing Olympic products like Fuwa toys, magnets, coins, pins, clothing, crafts, pottery, in addition special Olympic commemorative postal products issued by the China Post and Beijing Post. The participating Beijing Post branches are scattered across 18 districts and counties citywide. The Olympic Strategic Forum 2012

July 25th, 2010

In 2005, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded London the 2012 Summer Olympic Games; as part of the bid proposal, the London Olympics promised significant upgrades to the stadiums and facilities in London for holding the Olympiad, all of which will cost taxpayer monies to complete.

The process of turning these promises into actual construction for the Olympics is the job of the Olympic Strategic Forum for Construction 2012, which is dedicated to coordinating the efforts of Government and contractors to build a state of the arts athletic facility which will reflect well on the United Kingdom and London throughout the 2012 Games and be, in the words of Olympics minister Tessa Jowell, the pride of the UK for a generation.

Towards that aim of coordination, the Strategic Forum for Construction is working heavily with both Government and construction clients on all phases of the project. The aim is to leverage the most out of existing proposals and construction and management techniques, rather than doing the traditional high profile project of reinvention of the wheel and several firms in the UK have considerable experience with building stadiums, hotels, and facilities, and that expertise should be utilized to the utmost to make sure that the 2012 Olympic Games have an inspiring venue that reflects well on London, and comes in on time and under budget, while remaining usable for a generation afterwards. London, in particular, wants to avoid the issues that plagued the cities of Los Angeles and Atlanta in the United States, where the high costs of maintaining and renovating the facilities after the 1984 and 1996 games effectively meant the Olympic facilities were abandoned.

Towards that aim, the Strategic Forum is working on the proposals not just from a cost-accounting perspective, but from a land use and municipal needs perspective. Attention is being put towards accessibility by mass transit, so that when the Games have moved on, the facilities are still of use to the City of London. Effort is being put into traffic flow management, so that when the Games are in session, the city doesn’t come to a grinding halt, as happened in Atlanta and Athens. This focus on attendees and the spectator experience is critical for the success of the London 2012 games, and puts a great premium on attendee and participant health and safety, including access to adequate medical facilities in the case of emergencies, ambulance access ways and more.

The ultimate aim of this process is to create a modern sporting facility that can be used, and be a source of civic pride for generations. It’s meant to be state of the art, sustainable, and low maintenance, while using best construction and financial practices to keep it from ballooning significantly over budget. To make these promises turn to reality, the Strategic Forum Construction 2012 planning committee have issued a set of Program Commitments, designed to provide guidance to all contractors at all levels of the project and planning process. Current estimates of the total project cost for the London Olympic Park are in excess of 9 billion pounds, and it’s hoped that the project will come in under budget.

Durban Olympics 2020 – Durban gets support right at the top to make their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games!

July 24th, 2010

Durban Olympics 2020 – Durban gets support right at the top to make their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games!

There has been much excitement amongst the Durban locals this week after the Mayor of Durban, Obed Mlaba, formerly announced that Durban plans to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.  The Olympic Games have never been on African soil, so Durban’s win will be as historic as South Africa’s win of World Cup 2010.  South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has also extended his support for the Durban Olympics in 2020.  South Africa has shown the world it can host a major world event with it’s outstanding hosting of the FIFA World Cup, and it now sets its sites on hosting more world tournaments and events.

South Africa’s Olympic body, SASCOC, has now announced that it will formerly oversee an Olympic bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, with Durban being considered the favourite city to win the Olympic bid.

Even the president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, who hailed the recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa as an outstanding success, has backed the Olympic bid and has said that if a country can host the World Cup, it can easily host the Olympic Games.

The World Cup has proven to be an excellent advertisement for Durban’s ability to host the Olympic Games, as all the infrastructure needed to host such a massive tournament is already in place for the Olympics in 2020, and will just need a bit of polishing up!  The Major of Durban, Obed Mlaba, has said that feasibility studies are to be conducted, and has already spoken of where the Olympic Village in 2020 will be as well as the Aqua Centre and Equestrian facilities, so it is all full steam ahead for the Durban Olympic bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.  Follow all the news and read updates from Durban, as well as information on Durban hotels and Durban attractions at www.thedurbanolympics.com.

Watch Olympics 2010 Vancouver Winter Online Free Streaming

The 2010 Winter Olympic games are being held in Vancouver, a city in the province of British Columbia located in the country of Canada. This marks the 21st Winter Olympic games, with the previous games being held in 2006 in Turin, Italy.

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler, British Columbia and in the Vancouver suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics are the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

Following Olympic tradition, then Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

The city of Vancouver was elected host city of the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010 at the 115th IOC Session in Prague on 2 July 2003. Eight cities applied to host the Games: Andorra la Vella (Andorra), Bern (Switzerland), Harbin (China), Jaca (Spain), PyeongChang (Republic of Korea), Salzburg (Austria), Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Vancouver (Canada).

The following cities were accepted as Candidate Cities to host the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board on 28 August 2002 (in the order of drawing of lots):

- Vancouver (Canada)
- Salzburg (Austria)
- PyeongChang (Republic of Korea)
- Bern (Switzerland)

On 27 September 2002, the city of Bern withdrew its candidature to host the XXI Olympic Winter Games.

The official 2010 Olympic motto is “With glowing hearts”, which is a line in reference to the country’s national anthem (O’ Canada). The opening and closing ceremonies are scheduled for February 12 and February 28, and both will be held in the BC Place stadium. Venues for games are scattered across Vancouver and Whistler, which is a city atop the Rockie mountains. Venues include the BC Place Stadium, UBC Winter Sports Centre, the Pacific Coliseum, and the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The official logo for the Vancouver 2010 games is an inukshuk, which is an intricate stone statue traditionally built by carefully stacking rocks to form shapes and patterns. The logo resembles a standing human with arms outstretched and an open mouth. There has been controversy over the logo, with some Native and indigenous groups claiming the logo appropriates and cheapens their cultural and spiritual heritage. Additionally the destruction of the Eagleridge Bluffs to make room for the olympic village caused further anger as the spot served as an enviornmentally and culturally significant area.

Regardless, the Olympic games marks a period of time where nations across the world can for a short while take rest from the regular war and crime stories that usually make the headlines, and unify as one under the spirit that Olympic games stand for – peace, progress and feats of courage and strength.

Selling Your Business: The 2010 Winter Olympic Games Parallel

July 20th, 2010

Now that the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games has past, it is instructive to think about the ways in which selling your business is similar to preparing for the opening and the Olympic Games. Strange as it may seem to you, there are some marked similarities.

Let’s examine the events leading up to the opening ceremony. And we will only go as far back as the previous Olympic winter games, four years ago. Athletes from countries all over the world were making their own commitments to work to be invited to compete in the next winter Olympics. They were committing to train very hard for the next four years. In many cases for a single chance at a best performance and hopefully Olympic medal.

For many their chance to show what they can do will be very brief. In other cases, including team sports, it will be longer. But since the entire competition, for all events, excluding the para Olympics will last only two weeks, all chances will be of necessarily short duration. Think of it! Thousands of athletes will have trained and prepared for years for this event. If they show up to compete with a slight injury, or a cold, or anything else that prevents them from being their very best. Too bad for them. And it will all be over in two weeks.

Then there is the other side of the games. The participants need proper facilities on which to compete. They also need to be housed, fed, given medical attention, moved from place to place, and on and on. And we won’t even touch security. This didn’t happen by accident in Vancouver, or any past host location. A vast organization needed to be built to deliver all of this,  and make it easily accessible for communication to the rest of the world. And all at a cost that is hoped will break even at worst.

None of this can be achieved over night. Like the athletes, the organization responsible for the Vancouver 2010 games, had to work for the better part of the last four years to plan for and prepare the venue and all related services. Calling on a large variety of experts to contribute as and when needed. And this will continue until the very end of the games and the closing ceremonies.

Let’s come back down to earth and how this relates to selling your business. As an owner you need to mirror the actions of both the athletes and the local organizations. They started planning and working on their skills long before the event. You need to do the same. They were preparing in advance for a specific Olympic event. You need to prepare your business for a specific event . Its sale.

Like the local Olympic organizers you may need to acquire expert assistance to assist you in you preparation. Experts like lawyers, business valuators, accountants, etc. Your preparation to sell your business may not take four years. However it is likely to take longer than you expect. So you need to start preparing your business for sale long before you expect that you will sell it. Early preparation is just as important for you as it is for Olympic athletes and organizers.

Another similarity is that there will be unexpected challenges along the way. The economy can be a big one.  Just as the Vancouver Olympic organizers have been seriously challenged by the downturn in the World economy, you will also be experiencing challenges if you are trying to sell a business today.

However, you have one advantage over Olympic organizers. You can likely decide to defer the sale of your business until the business climate improves somewhat. That is somewhat analogous to an Olympic athlete being allowed to reschedule his event to another day. A day when he doesn’t have a cold. The Olympic Games have fixed start and end dates. So they have no flexibility. Actually another advantage you have is that unless your business provides snow removal, lack of snow will not be a problem for you. As it has been in the preparation for some 2010 Olympic events.

With this article as preparation, you will probably be able to think of lots of other ways in which preparing you business for sale is similar to preparing for a high performance athletic event. So don’t be tempted to trivialize this comparison. Instead, use it to energize your thinking. And something even more important, use it to energize your actions, and prepare thoroughly, and well in advance.

Get a head start on preparing your business for sale. For the merits of early preparation see www.selling-a-business-without-stress.com/freereport.html . It this link is not live, just copy the address and paste it into your browser.

12 Things You Didn’T Know About The 2008 Olympics

July 19th, 2010

So you probably watched the 2008 Olympics, but do you know all of these facts about it?

1. 4.7 billion people watched the Beijing Olympics. That’s a lot of people. No wonder I started by saying that you probably watched it.

2. For the first time, India managed to win a gold in an individual event – the 10m air rifles event was won by Abhinav Bindra. But with 17% of the world’s population, they still only won 0.31% of Olympic medals.

3. Medals mean a lot to participating countries. That’s why the US Swimming Association paid Michael Phelps $60,000 per gold medal, and he received another $200,000 from the US Olympic Committee.

4. The 2008 Olympics would not have ben possible without the 70,000 volunteers who made sure the games ran smoothly – compared to the 10,708 athletes. And you would not have watched the games without the 12,000 broadcasting staff.

5. The Beijing Olympics cost $43 billion to set up, and the buildings will be used as entertainment facilities afterwards.

6. 1,104 rain-dispersing rockets were launched up into the sky in an attempt to prevent rain before the opening ceremony.

7. There were no medals awarded in the 1900 Paris Olympic games – winners were given pieces of art instead.

8. Also in the 1900 Olympics, a French boy under 10 years of age filled in for the Dutch coxswain and scored a gold medal for the Dutch team: he is the youngest ever gold medalist.

9. Beijing used a digital system to manage the launch of fireworks to reduce the time difference between launches to mere milliseconds.

10. The Olympic motto “Citius, Altius,     Fortius” in Latin means “Swifter, Higher, Stronger”.

11. The Beijing Olympics saw the setting of 43 new world records – and 132 new Olympic records. The number of countries to win a medal also hit 87, a new record.

12. The 2008 Olympics luckily coincided with an uncommon rise in Beijing’s air quality – the city had the best air quality in ten years.

These facts should have told you something about the latest Olympics that you didn’t know – now it’s time to wait till London 2012.

Visit http://olympicscontest.topdealgoods.com/ to give your opinion on the Olympian who dominated the 2008 games, and get a chance to win $250 in gift cards to the restaurant and store of your choice.

Mothers Capture Precious Medals at the Beijing Olympics

July 18th, 2010

The full range of female athletes on the 2008 Olympic teams makes it clear that age and family responsibilities are not the barriers to participation in the Games they used to be. Stories from Beijing highlight the courage and resolve of the mothers of the world – as they demonstrate their athletic prowess and win gold or silver medals.

Significant are the 20 mothers on the USA Olympic team, including past medalists – swimmer Dara Torres, basketball player Lisa Leslie, and softball player, Jennie Finch. Dara Torres stands out as a role model for any mother wondering if it is too late to begin again. Now age 41, she began participating in the Olympics twenty-four years ago, swimming in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 2000 Games. Retiring, getting married and wanting to start a family, she skipped the 2004 Games and had a child two years ago. Swimming for fitness after the birth of her daughter, Tessa, she thought she was done with competitive swimming. But she found that her times were better than ever.

Eight long years after her last Olympics, Dara marched in the Beijing opening ceremonies with 9 medals to her credit, the most of any USA athlete in these Games. Swimming in individual and relay team competition, she won 3 silver medals, losing gold in the freestyle individual event by only one one-hundredth of a second. She now can now be proud of a record 12 Olympic medals in her career – so far! Asked “what will you tell your daughter about your record at this Olympics,” Dara said, “You don’t have to put an age limit on your dreams.”

Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania, a 38-year-old mother of a 13-year old son, was the triumphant gold medal winner of the women’s marathon in Beijing. Four years ago in Athens she had to relinquish her dreams of an Olympic medal at mile 20 due to heat exhaustion. But even then she did not completely quit. She walked for a mile – then started running again, coming in 20th in the 2004 competition. This time she was determined to win the race. She practiced and practiced in hot weather, firmly focused on avoiding another injury. Learning from her past failure, Constantina refused to give up on her dreams and worked hard to achieve her goal of Olympic gold.

Another mother, 33-year-old Oksana Chusovitina, took the silver medal for Germany in individual women’s vault. Older than most of the other gymnasts by ten years, Oksana had participated in four previous Olympics, representing the former Soviet Union and winning a team gold. What brought her to Germany at this stage of her career? For the past 6 years her 9-year-old son, Alisher, has been treated there for leukemia. When he was first diagnosed, Oksana could not get help for him in her native Uzbekistan. Not one to be stopped by the challenges she faced, she and her husband moved to Germany to train while Alisher was in treatment. Oksana demonstrates her commitment to family by competing for Germany in Beijing.

If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re too old to reach your goals, you can learn a lesson from these athletes and mothers. It’s never too late to challenge yourself. With maturity, drive and focus, you can achieve your dreams. As Dara Torres said, “To me, if it helps anyone else out there who is in their middle-aged years, putting off something they couldn’t do because they thought they were too old or maybe because they had a child, they thought they couldn’t balance things as a parent – if it shows anyone you can do it, I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Make A Dvd Video For 2010 Winter Olympics With Powerpoint

July 17th, 2010

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games, was a multi winter sports event which was held on February 12-28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 82 nations took part in this activity.

Featured sports events are contested on snow or ice, which includes alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, bobsledding and ice hockey among others. Other athletic sports have been included to the Winter Olympic Games as they have matured and gained popularity. Such relatively new sports events include luge, short track speed skating, and freestyle.

Since the great event is over now, are there any wonderful moments still linger in your mind? No matter it is for your favorite sport or favorite sport star, do you want to make a DVD video for them and sharing the video on your blog or YouTube with others? Here are some popular points you can consider to make the DVD video:
- The 10 best moments from Vancouver’s opening ceremony
- The wonderful aerials freestyle skiing moments at winter Olympics
- The perfect moments of the closing ceremony
- The birth of each Olympic champion during each contest
- The figure skating team of 2010 winter Olympic

Now we take the 10 best moments from Vancouver’s opening ceremony as an example to illustrate how to make a DVD video for it with PowerPoint and free PowerPoint to video converter.
Step1: If you haven’t been to the contest yourself and taken photographs, you can find some free copyright ones on Internet. Collect them onto your computer. If there are some videos available, that would be better.

Step2: Open PowerPoint, set a Vancouver Olympic background for it. For details about how to do it, you can view this article: How to Set Background Picture for a PowerPoint File.

Step3
: Import all the pictures and videos you have collected to PowerPoint in sequence. Modify the look of each picture with the picture tool of PowerPoint. You can also add some comment to each picture.

Step4: Add animations to the objects and set the transition time of each slide. After that, preview the PowerPoint slideshow by pressing F5.

Step5: Convert the PowerPoint presentation to video with free PowerPoint to video converter – Acoolsoft PPT to Video Free after you have finished creating the slideshow. Then, you can play the video presentation through most media players, or upload the video to your blog or video sharing sites for sharing with others. If you also want to make a DVD from the PowerPoint presentation directly, you can use this PowerPoint to DVD converter.

Creating DVD video for the 2010 winter Olympics can be interesting and worthy. If you happened to have PowerPoint installed on your computer, you can try making one.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics: Tickets

July 17th, 2010

If you want to buy tickets for the Vacouver 2010 Olympics, you should be checking in regularly as the tickets to various games are being sold in phases (and if you happen to have friends in Canada, now is a good time to be in touch since they’ll have an easier time getting the tickets). Here’s how it all works:

Canadians, weather they are citizens or simply residents are allowed to buy tickets. They must:

• Have a current and valid Canadian mailing address (no P.O. Boxes)
• Be able to sign for secure delivery in December 2009/January 2010
• Open only one account per person. If you already opened an account for a previous phase of tickets, you cannot open another one.
• Use a Visa card. No other cards are accepted.

For international sales (including the United States)

• Must purchase tickets through their national Olympic Committee

Americans can purchase tickets through CoSport, which is the official distributor for tickets in the USA. For this purpose, Americans means anyone living in America, including Canadians who reside in the United States.

For the Canadians, in order to purchase tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games, you must follow these times. The tickets are sold in four phases:

• Phase 1 (already closed): October 3 – December 22, 2008; Request period: October 3 – November 7, 2008
• Phase 2(already closed) June 6–July 31, 2009
• Phase 3   November 7, 2009
• Phase 4   February 12–28, 2010

The way it works is that basically, when each phase is over, fewer and few tickets will be available until finally phase 4, when the games are actually taking place, at which time whatever tickets are left for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics will be available, although again only to Canadian residents.

You can also of course buy tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games through various ticket brokers online. The costs will definitely be higher, but there is no lottery system and no worry about weather you will get the tickets. If they are available and you are willing to pay, you are in and that’s that. Enjoy the games.

For the Americans who would like to purchase tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, we recommend a visit to CoSport. There are limited tickets available and you must prove your residency in the United States. CoSport also handles tickets for a number of other countries, including Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Sweden and European Union nations.
