The Curling Olympic sheet, by World Curling Federation standards, is an area of ice 146 to 150 feet (45 to 46 m) in length by 14.5 to 16.5 feet (4.4 to 5.0 m) in width, carefully prepared to be as close to level as possible. The ice is most often frozen by means of a refrigeration plant that cools a brine solution running lengthwise in numerous pipes under the curling sheet. A key part of the preparation of the playing surface is the spraying of water droplets, called “pebble,” onto the level ice. Due to the friction between the stone and pebble, the stone turns to the inside or outside, causing the stone to “curl.”

The amount of curl can change during a game as the pebble wears. The surface of the ice is maintained at a temperature around 23 °F (?5 °C). Making and maintaining perfect ice conditions at a Curling Olympic club is as much art as science. Most Curling Olympic clubs have an ice maker, whose main job is to care for the ice. At the major Curling Olympic championships, ice maintenance is extremely important. Large events, such as the Brier or other national championships, are typically held in an arena that presents a challenge to the ice maker, as they must constantly monitor and adjust the ice and air temperatures as well as air humidity levels to ensure a consistent playing surface.

It is common for each sheet of ice to have multiple sensors embedded in order to monitor surface temperature, as well as probes set up in the seating area (to monitor humidity) and in the compressor room (to monitor brine supply and return temperatures). Players must push out of the hack to deliver their stones; whether they are left- or right-handed determines which foot they use.

On the sheet, a 12-foot (3.7 m) wide set of concentric rings, called the house, is placed (painted or by laying down vinyl rings) near each end of the rink. The centre of the house, known as the button, is marked by the junction of two lines that divide the house into quarters. The two lines are the centre line, which is drawn lengthwise down the centre of the sheet, and the tee line, drawn 16 feet (4.9 m) from the backboard and parallel to it. Two other lines—the hog lines—are drawn parallel to each backboard and 37 feet (11 m) from them.

More so than in many team sports, good sportsmanship is an integral part of Curling Olympic. For example, celebrating an error by the opposing team, fully acceptable in some sports, is frowned upon in Curling Olympic. Even at the highest levels of play, players are expected to “call their own fouls,” so to speak, such as alerting the opposing skip if they burned a stone. It is also traditional for the winning team to buy the losing team a drink after the game. So it comes as no surprise that there has been a trickle-down effect, inspiring companies not directly associated with the games to design collections around Asian themes.

Sportswear brands are cashing in on this summer’s Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with Chinese-inspired clothing and accessories collections. The most highly politicized Olympics in recent history notwithstanding, the event has garnered so much attention that brands such as Fila and New Balance are racing to tap into the Eastern trend.

The Olympics are a hook for many companies, according to a marketing expert, Renee Peet, of the company Brand Image, which helps companies market and sell their products. “We started seeing it about a year and a half or two years ago, the requests of how to co-brand around the Olympics,” she explained.

New Balance has created two lines of lifestyle shoes: a China Mask collection that plays upon the moods and characters of traditional Chinese Opera, and the Elements 576 Collection, based on Chinese Taoist philosophy.

“China is more top-of-mind for people than it would be, with the Olympics going on in Beijing,” the product manager for New Balance, Alana Choquette, said.

The company’s limited-edition Elements collection, which recently hit stores, was designed with wood, water, and earth in mind, three of the elements believed to represent types of energy in constant flux with one another, according to Taoism. Details such as the peel leather on the black-and-green “wood” sneakers are meant to convey the texture of bark or sediment. Meanwhile, the blue-and-white “water” shoes have a transparent rubber outsole that gives the optical illusion of floating bubbles.

Conversely, New Balance’s China Mask collection, to be launched globally in August, represents moods through color: black for fury, red for anger, and so on. The suede shoes with mesh accents feature embossed graphics, and re-creations of Chinese masks are visible on New Balance’s signature N along either of the shoes’ sides.

“This marks the first collection that was designed out of China, which is exciting given the link with the Beijing Olympics,” Ms. Choquette said of the Mask collection, which is the product of a sneaker design competition held across Asia.

“We are seeing a lot of trends of Asian influence. … The Olympics is going to give that a boost and make people even more aware of it,” Ms. Peet said.

The current influx of Asian-themed products includes Fila’s relaunch of its Wellness collection, in this incarnation with Eastern teachings as the focal point.

“We were talking about Eastern philosophy and there has been a real turn toward yoga and Pilates, and it’s not a coincidence that this is the year of the Olympics in China,” the director of design and apparel for Fila, Freya Tamayo, said.

The Wellness collection, which hit stores earlier this month, has a very “zen-like feeling” and includes eco-friendly fabrics such as soy cotton and bamboo Lycra (which happen to be antimicrobial) and soft silhouettes for sports such as yoga and tai chi. The pastel long-sleeve hooded tunics are made without seams and zippers for added comfort, and the form-fitting stretch pants incorporate a dropped waist and moisture-wicking technology. Puma chose an alternative route with the bag collection that will have its debut in August. The company sponsored a competition during London Fashion Week this year for students enrolled at London’s Central Saint Martins School. Students were charged with designing a bag, inspired by the Olympics, to hold Puma’s new sprint shoe — the USAN. The three winners selected included the Gold Medallion bag by George Omerod, who was inspired by the idea of an Olympic medal, or ”the symbol of a winner,” as he put it. The gold-and-gray circular shoulder bag actually unzips around the side to create a larger bag. The bags ($49-$79) will be sold in Puma Concept stores.

Reebok also looked to the East with its Pump Omni Hexride sneaker, which it will launch with Chinese basketball player Yao Ming, of the Houston Rockets, on opening day of the games. A gold-and-red dragon encircles the entire surface of the shoe, drawing from traditional Chinese symbols and colors. A total of 2,008 pairs of the leather sneakers ($150) will be available for purchase in China next week; a limited number will come soon to retailers worldwide.

Still, those concerned that Olympics purchases will go out with the torchlight need not worry — the Asian trend won’t end with the games, according to Ms. Peet. “You’ll see more affordable brands are going to do their copying of brands like Adidas, and it will take three to six months to do it. The cycles are really fast,” she said.

Ms. Tamayo of Fila also said that the trend is here to stay, but for different reasons: “The trend toward Eastern philosophy is a global one. It’s not just a fashion trend,” she said. “It’s happening on several different levels. It’s much more far-reaching than designing clothes.”

London is to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The games are to be held from 27th July to 12th August 2012, to be followed by the Paralympic Games. An Olympic Village has been proposed to be built with 17,320 beds providing a comfortable and spacious environment for athletes.

There is to be a massive redevelopment of public transport. This includes the expansion of the London Underground’s East London Line, upgrades to the Docklands Light Railway and the North London Line, and the new “Javelin” service. The causes for a rise in costs include rise in commodity prices, adjustments to transport figures to reflect 2012 prices and a revised estimate for inflation on construction costs.

Victoria is set to host the Canadian Figure Skating Championships and the Junior Nationals in January, 2011. The events will be held at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. This marks the third time Victoria has been chosen as the site for this event.

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing has come to a close. We will once again be at a loss for something to watch on TV or discuss around the water cooler at work. The 2008 Olympics stood out among those that came before it for a number of reasons that captivated audiences around the globe. Though the games started out with controversy over the host city, I believe the games will be remembered most for the positive achievements of the athletes. Goal Setting is not about writing them down, although that can help to visualize them. Goal Setting is really about creating a positive Mind Set and a positive self dialogue about the things you want to achieve. We all talk to ourselves all the time. Most of us do this internally in our heads, though some of us do this out loud in the bathroom when we think no one is listening. If the dialogue we have with ourselves is positive or negative will have a big impact on our daily lives and on achieving the goals we have set for ourselves.
It does not matter if the goal is small, huge, or even outrageous. How we choose to approach the goals we set will in the end determine their success or failure. That’s right, Mind Set is a choice. No matter the adversity you may face while on the path to your goal, you can choose to keep positive and focused.

Here are some simple ways to get your Goal Setting in the right Mind Set

Give yourself small, achievable Daily Goals and say something positive to yourself when you reach them.
If you give yourself a negative criticism, change it into a positive critique. For example, instead of saying “I completely failed” when a sales prospect falls through, say “That is ok, I will learn from this and be successful next time. My goal is still achievable”.
Don’t let others drag you down. Brush off critique that is harsh and not helpful to building success. You, and only you, are in control of achieving your goals.
Learn to accept Constructive Criticism, especially from yourself.
Remember that everyone has to start somewhere, no one is perfect, if someone had figured it all out we would all be out of business, and the only thing stopping you from being effective and successful is You.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of modern-day Olympics. With so much drama, so much romance, so much pizzazz, it is hard to imagine this world-wide spectacle being anything less than perfect. But you don’t have to dig too deeply to discover a humble and oft-times peculiar origin. Truly, it has taken several decades of Hollywood magic to produce the polished sports event we take for granted today.

According to Roman legend, the original Olympic Games were founded by none other than Heracles, the super human son of Zeus, no doubt as an opportunity to demonstrate his god like strength in front of the ladies. An alternative legend tells the story of Pelops, a Greek romantic, and father of the Olympics. In a desperate attempt to win the hand of his bride, Hippodamia, Pelops challenged her father, the King of Pisa, to a chariot race. To give himself the edge, Pelops replaced the king’s linchpin with one made of wax, which melted during the race, throwing the king from his chariot and killing him. Upon winning the race, the girl, and the entire empire, Pelops declared this the first Olympic Games – forever instilling the qualities of cheating and deception upon the games.

The ancient Olympics had their own version of celebrity appearances, including Homer, Socrates, Aristotle and Hippocrates. Even Plato got in on the games, winning not one but two gold medals in the pankration event.The original “games” really only entailed one game, a 192 meter dash known as “the stade” – which was run entirely in the nude (once again giving Heracles an excuse to strut his stuff). In fact, the word “gymnasium” comes from the Greek “gymnos”, which literally means “school for naked exercise”. Later additions to the Olympics included boxing, jumping, discus and javelin, which gladly did include clothing. The surprising exception to this events list is the marathon race. This famous run, including the torch, were never part of ancient Olympics, and were not added to the venue until over 1500 years later.

The ancient games lasted nearly 1200 years, from at least 776 BC to 393 AD, when the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the games because he felt they were pagan and evil. And so the Olympic Games slept for over a thousand years until 1892, when a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea at a meeting of the Union des Sports Athletiques in Paris. His pitch failed miserably. But ever the optimist, Pierre tried again two years later, this time in front a meeting of 79 delegates representing 9 countries. The delegates voted unanimously in favor of the revitalization, and so, in 1896 in the city of Athens, the Olympics were reborn.

The 1896 games were a disaster. As the games were poorly publicized, they never received the international support needed. Contestants were not backed by their respective countries, and in fact were forced to travel to Greece at their own expense. Several of the contestants were tourists who just happened to be in Greece on holiday.

Due to poor planning, the 1896 games was held in very cold weather, though it consisted entirely of “summer” events. In her book First to the Wall, 100 Years of Olympic Swimming, Kelly Gonsalves describes the first swimming event: “Not only did they battle 12-foot waves, but the weather in Greece was unusually cold and the water was a frigid 55 degrees Fahrenheit.” The book goes on to tell the story of Garner Williams, an American Swimmer, who despite spending a fortune to train and travel to the Olympics, jumped out of the water after only a few moments into the race yelling “I’m freezing”.

Other athletes also had difficult experiences at the Olympic games. After traveling on foot from Rome to Athens, a one month journey, the Italian athlete Carlo Airoldi was banned from the games because he was a professional. As the book The Olympic’s Strangest Moments describes, Dorando Pietri was denied his marathon gold because an over-anxious official helped him cross the finish line.

The Olympics are typically thought of as an event of world unity, though history would have something else to say. The official Olympic flag, designed in 1914 by Pierre de Coubertin, contains five interconnected rings, the symbolize the “five significant continents of the world”, leaving Africa completely off the map. 1936 brought the games to pre-war Germany, an opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of the “Aryan” race, or so thought Adolf Hitler, who campaigned heavily to secure the games. Of course, many will remember Jesse Owens, the African American runner who proudly taught the Germans a thing or two. The win of Luxembourg’s Josef Barthel in 1952 was met with an embarrassed silence. As no one expected a Luxembourg athlete to win, the orchestra at the medals ceremony was without the score to Luxenbourg’s national anthem.

Over the years, several attempts have been made to improve the Olympics. Both motor-boat racing, and bicycle polo were introduced, and later removed from the games. Hollywood was literally brought in to add some pizzazz in the 1960 Winter Games. Walt Disney was elected head of the organizing committee over opening ceremonies, which included special effects, ice statues, and the releasing of 2,000 white doves.

Scams, politics, wins and heartbreaks: these words apply equally as well to the modern day Olympics as to ancient. If the Olympic games have taught us anything, it’s that society never changes, even after thousands of years. If Pelops could visit our games today, while he might be impressed with our bright fireworks and Hollywood illusions, I think he would feel quite at home with the true game on display: human nature.

In 2005, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded London the 2012 Summer Olympic Games; as part of the bid proposal, the London Olympics promised significant upgrades to the stadiums and facilities in London for holding the Olympiad, all of which will cost taxpayer monies to complete.

The process of turning these promises into actual construction for the Olympics is the job of the Olympic Strategic Forum for Construction 2012, which is dedicated to coordinating the efforts of Government and contractors to build a state of the arts athletic facility which will reflect well on the United Kingdom and London throughout the 2012 Games and be, in the words of Olympics minister Tessa Jowell, the pride of the UK for a generation.

Towards that aim of coordination, the Strategic Forum for Construction is working heavily with both Government and construction clients on all phases of the project. The aim is to leverage the most out of existing proposals and construction and management techniques, rather than doing the traditional high profile project of reinvention of the wheel and several firms in the UK have considerable experience with building stadiums, hotels, and facilities, and that expertise should be utilized to the utmost to make sure that the 2012 Olympic Games have an inspiring venue that reflects well on London, and comes in on time and under budget, while remaining usable for a generation afterwards. London, in particular, wants to avoid the issues that plagued the cities of Los Angeles and Atlanta in the United States, where the high costs of maintaining and renovating the facilities after the 1984 and 1996 games effectively meant the Olympic facilities were abandoned.

Towards that aim, the Strategic Forum is working on the proposals not just from a cost-accounting perspective, but from a land use and municipal needs perspective. Attention is being put towards accessibility by mass transit, so that when the Games have moved on, the facilities are still of use to the City of London. Effort is being put into traffic flow management, so that when the Games are in session, the city doesn’t come to a grinding halt, as happened in Atlanta and Athens. This focus on attendees and the spectator experience is critical for the success of the London 2012 games, and puts a great premium on attendee and participant health and safety, including access to adequate medical facilities in the case of emergencies, ambulance access ways and more.

The ultimate aim of this process is to create a modern sporting facility that can be used, and be a source of civic pride for generations. It’s meant to be state of the art, sustainable, and low maintenance, while using best construction and financial practices to keep it from ballooning significantly over budget. To make these promises turn to reality, the Strategic Forum Construction 2012 planning committee have issued a set of Program Commitments, designed to provide guidance to all contractors at all levels of the project and planning process. Current estimates of the total project cost for the London Olympic Park are in excess of 9 billion pounds, and it’s hoped that the project will come in under budget.

Durban Olympics 2020 – Durban gets support right at the top to make their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games!

There has been much excitement amongst the Durban locals this week after the Mayor of Durban, Obed Mlaba, formerly announced that Durban plans to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.  The Olympic Games have never been on African soil, so Durban’s win will be as historic as South Africa’s win of World Cup 2010.  South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has also extended his support for the Durban Olympics in 2020.  South Africa has shown the world it can host a major world event with it’s outstanding hosting of the FIFA World Cup, and it now sets its sites on hosting more world tournaments and events.

South Africa’s Olympic body, SASCOC, has now announced that it will formerly oversee an Olympic bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, with Durban being considered the favourite city to win the Olympic bid. 

Even the president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, who hailed the recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa as an outstanding success, has backed the Olympic bid and has said that if a country can host the World Cup, it can easily host the Olympic Games.

The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

The city of Vancouver was elected host city of the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010 at the 115th IOC Session in Prague on 2 July 2003. Eight cities applied to host the Games: Andorra la Vella (Andorra), Bern (Switzerland), Harbin (China), Jaca (Spain), PyeongChang (Republic of Korea), Salzburg (Austria), Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Vancouver (Canada).

The following cities were accepted as Candidate Cities to host the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board on 28 August 2002 (in the order of drawing of lots):

The official 2010 Olympic motto is “With glowing hearts”, which is a line in reference to the country’s national anthem (O’ Canada). The opening and closing ceremonies are scheduled for February 12 and February 28, and both will be held in the BC Place stadium. Venues for games are scattered across Vancouver and Whistler, which is a city atop the Rockie mountains. Venues include the BC Place Stadium, UBC Winter Sports Centre, the Pacific Coliseum, and the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The official logo for the Vancouver 2010 games is an inukshuk, which is an intricate stone statue traditionally built by carefully stacking rocks to form shapes and patterns. The logo resembles a standing human with arms outstretched and an open mouth. There has been controversy over the logo, with some Native and indigenous groups claiming the logo appropriates and cheapens their cultural and spiritual heritage. Additionally the destruction of the Eagleridge Bluffs to make room for the olympic village caused further anger as the spot served as an enviornmentally and culturally significant area.
